Esparza made her debut in 2012 when she signed with Invicta FC. Invicta FC2 in 2012 saw Sarah Schneider defeat Esparza. Esparza attacked Schneider from the Argentine by using a heel hook to get on her back. She briefly attempted to apply a rear naked choke, but she was unable to control her opponent.

Carla Esparza has made a remarkable recovery from nerve damage suffered in 2007. Rose Namajunas defeated her to win the UFC strawweight title in May. In November, she is expected to defend her title against former champ Zhang Weili. Recently, she shared an update via social media on her fight camp.
Following the accident, Esparza went to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with nerve damage. Her hospital bill was $30,000 but she agreed to fight. Invicta FC 7 saw Maya Hamasaki fight her again. Claudia Gadelha was her next opponent, but Gadelha pulled out due to stomach disease.

In a COVID-quiet UFC APEX Las Vegas event, she beat Yan Xiaonan. She finished in less than eight minutes. She defended her title by knockout in round one of the UFC APEX event in Las Vegas, June 2019.
