Each year, the WNBA holds a Draft to select new players. The draft draws players drawn from a pool of talented women's basketball players. 1997 was the first WNBA Draft. Today there are more than 60 teams. There are many categories that the draft takes into consideration, such as overall strength, speed and athleticism. It also provides teams with the chance to acquire a new star.
Shakira Austin
The Lakers are expected this season to be a major contender and Austin will provide them with depth at the center position. Austin will also be able to guard several positions and is a good fit with their veteran depth and veteran players. Austin is a good outside player and will be able to benefit from Delle Donne. Her defensive instincts are also excellent, but she will be tested by the WNBA's most difficult defenses.
Washington Mystics selected Shakira Austin as the No. She was the third overall pick in WNBA Draft. She is sixth Ole Miss Product to be drafted into the WNBA. Austin played for the Ole Miss Golden Eagles for two seasons, earning first-team All-SEC honors and helping the team reach its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007.
Mya Hollingshed
Mya Hollingshed served as a Pre-Woden Award Watch List member this year. However, despite her impressive statistics, she had never played basketball during her childhood. Her family includes athletes. Her grandfather was drafted second by the Washington Bullets 1978. Her father played basketball in Grambling. Hollingshed enjoyed soccer her senior year and junior year, but her mother thought it was too competitive.
She was considered by the Las Vegas Aces as a wing player but they decided against it. They didn't want her to be unavailable at No. 11 or later. Nevertheless, Hollingshed isn't likely to get passed up, and she'll still have a shot. It is probable that her WNBA professional career will begin in future.
Nyara Sabally
On Monday, Nyara Sabally, a big man from New York was selected by the New York Liberty in the fifth round. Sabally was injured in the knee and cannot play this season. Sika Kone, No. 29, was also picked by the team. After undergoing surgery to her right knee in March, she was ranked 29. Sabally was a top pick because of her size, but her knee issues have made her a risky pick.
Not only was she the fifth overall pick but Sabally is also the sister to Oregon star Satou, who plays with the Dallas Wings. Although she has not yet been drafted into the WNBA, her performance for the Ducks has been outstanding. In 2020, she and her sister were drafted together. This was their first time in the draft since Chiney Ogwumike (2008). Sabally might be as smart as her sister.
