The Washington Spirit will face the Chicago Red Stars in Saturday's 2021 NWSL championship. The match will be televised on CBS Television Network and streamed internationally on Paramount+ and the Twitch channel. The game will begin at noon ET in Louisville (Kentucky) and both teams will try to win for the first-ever league title.

San Diego Wave FC holds a strong lead in the NWSL regular seasons standings, with three wins in their three first matches. On April 27, the team beat Houston Dynamo, 4-1, and on May 7, they defeated Chicago Red Stars, 2 to 1. Kaleigh Riesl and Alex Morgan each scored twice in the Waves' win of 2-1 against the Chicago Red Stars.


Courage is a double win for Jessica McDonald

Jessica McDonald from Courage scored two goals during a match against Portland Thorns. Lynn Williams dribbled the ball high into a box, and Debinha one-touched the ball inside to McDonald's. McDonald's volleyed the ball into the right side of the net. This goal is McDonalds' 50th career goal. The win gives the Courage the league championship and puts the team on the verge of a long playoff run.

Trinity Rodman scores Thorns

Trinity Rodman, who scored three goals in three of the previous matches, has been the center of the Thorns offense. She has been an integral part of the U.S. national team system for years and helped her country win the CONCACAF under-20 championship last March. Rodman was an outstanding player on the night. He created three opportunities. She was key to the team’s playmaking. On the defensive side, she dazzled with nine recoveries, an interception, and three tackles.

Wave FC's Kailen Sheridan saves seven career penalties

Kailen Sheridan, Wave FC goalkeeper, saves a penalty for the seventh time in her career. Sheridan saved two more shots and stopped three shots during her last game against San Diego. The Wave lost 2-1 on Sunday to the Kansas City Current. Amirah Ali scored Wave's first goal in 88 minutes. Ali was assisted by Makenzy Doniak. Kansas City won the game in 27 minutes thanks to CeCe Keizer's penalty kick.

Alyssa Mutz has resigned from the league

Alyssa Mauutz announced her retirement from NWSL on Tuesday. The Chicago Red Stars midfielder was a veteran of the league since 2003. She announced her retirement just before Wednesday's match. This move will likely create a void within the league which has had a difficult time with transfer activity in recent years. Alyssa Mautz had sixteen goals and eight assists for the league over her 10-year-long career.
