The US soccer history is filled with overly ambitious owners and poor investments. There have also been aging players. In 1960s America's Soccer League was established. Although it spent as a major league, attendances weren't reflective of that. Indoor soccer took over in 1970s/80s. They had strong attendances but were financially struggling. Although the MISL folded in 1992 it is still part of the American soccer pyramid.
Major League Soccer
Despite the success of the American League of Professional Football, Major League Soccer's history in the US has been somewhat obscure. It was founded in 1996 and consisted of 10 teams. The conference was divided into the Eastern and Western. At first, the sport was overshadowed by the popularity of Football and Basketball in the US, and took several years before it gained widespread popularity. It is now one of the most loved sports in the country with more than 300 teams participating in the league.
