Washington Mystics – Who Are They Anyway?

Washington Mystics: An American professional basketball league based in Washington D.C., the Washington Mystics. They compete in Eastern Conference and are a member o the Women's National Basketball Association. The team was founded 1997, and its name is Alana Beard. Their first WNBA championship took place in 2010 and the Mystics now hold the title. Here are some things you should know about the team.

Alana Beard

Alana Beard (WNBA rookie) was chosen with the second overall pick during the 2004 WNBA draft. The Mystics finished 2003's Eastern Conference season last with a record that was 9-25. Beard was hired to help the team. Beard expressed her appreciation for her teammates, and the relationship she had with them. This was evident in Beard's performance in WNBA.

Changes to the team

Prior to the 2011 season, Washington Mystics made some controversial changes. Despite finishing the best season in franchise history, the team hasn't been as strong as fans hoped. The Mystics traded Skylar Smith and Courtney Harding, star forwards, to relieve Angela Taylor, head coach and general manger. New head coach Trudi Lacey was named to replace Taylor.


First-ever WNBA Finals

Washington Mysoltics had a thrilling WNBA Finals. After going down 2-0 in Game 1 they made a remarkable comeback. Elena Delle Donne scored 22 points for the Mystics in Game 5. Six-foot-five forward Elena Delle Donne won the MVP award for the game. She became the first WNBA player not to be seated to win this award. In addition, the team's two other star players - Emma Meesseman and Andre Iguodala - each scored at least 20 points. They were therefore voted the best team at the finals.

Organisational changes

Before the 2011 season began, the Mystics made a series of controversial changes to their organization. Angela Taylor, assistant coach was dismissed after the owners failed to agree to a new contract. Julie Plank, the head coach, refused to accept GM or coaching duties. Trudi Lacey was appointed GM. Mystics owner Sheila Johnson would not comment on Taylor's departure, citing ongoing human resources issues.

Modifications to uniforms

The Washington Mystics are currently in the midst of a major change in their uniforms. The uniforms of the Washington Mystics were previously white with black and gold outlines. The Mystics switched from white jerseys to dark blue jerseys for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The team retained its jersey sponsor, Inova, in 2013, but the partnership ends in 2015. The jerseys are now embroidered with the team's name and the logo of the city. In 2016, the Mystics made the jerseys more colorful, going all out on matchups.
