This franchise was founded in 2006, before the 2006 season. It was originally known as the Chicago Mercury. However, the team is now more popular as the Chicago Sky.

Despite being silent, the Chicago Sky were not present at the most recent WNBA drafts. However, local players were selected as high as the first round. The Dallas Wings selected Veronica Burton, a Northwestern guard, as their seventh overall pick. The Dallas Wings selected her seventh overall. She averaged 17.8 minutes, 5.5 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game. She also reached double figures at the Big Ten tournament. Phoenix Mercury drafted Maya Dodson (forward for Notre Dame) in the same draft.
Trades
The Sky have made some moves in order to improve their roster for the offseason. They traded away several players in exchange for new draft picks. Alaina coates was traded to Minnesota while Kaitlinou Samuelson and Astou Nedour were acquired from Dallas. Additionally, they traded their 16th selection in the 2021 Draft for a second round pick in 2022.

The team's home games are broadcast on WCIU-TV and WMEU-CD, while select games are televised nationally on NBA TV and ESPN.

The Chicago Sky have released their broadcast schedule for the 2021 season. The team will broadcast five regular season matches on CW26. Lisa Byington provides play-byplay commentary and Meghan McKeown provides color analysis. Five games also will air on My michiana in South Bend.

Fan base
The Chicago Sky have a vibrant and passionate fan base. They celebrate their achievements and try to make Chicago a better city. Thousands of Sky fan turned out to support the team when they won the 2015 WNBA Championship. This was a beautiful way to strengthen community spirit.
